There were good reasons for the blade design. The 499 and its successor were not designed as sushi knives or fire starters.
As I recall, I used a hacksaw, but could have used a sharp knife. I simply cut off the top of the guard so that I can get a better grip for close work. It will not rot like the leather on the 499. The improved version has a handle made out of like a rubberized material. I own one of the 499s and two of the improved version.ġ. For purposes of discussion only, there is an improved version of the knife. I was not aware that there has been any change to the 499.
